Why it is that the Online Coaching Industry is Broken (And How You Can Fix It)

Aug 25, 2022

You wouldn't believe it I've never had the desire to instruct coaches on how to coach. However, over the past seven years, I've gotten more involved in the business and have become fairly successful in my work. So naturally, other coaches have wanted to ask me questions for a bit.

This is when I began taking a closer look to the happenings in this industry. And the more I looked into it I noticed those doing things I didn't think they should do because they were not going to be successful. If you've worked in the coaching field for some years, you probably know what I'm talking about -- the coaching industry is full of poor advice, false promises, and even some plainly fraudulent practices.

And, even more troublingly, there are coaches in the world teaching topics they have no passion for, or competency in.

In some ways I'd go as the extent of saying the coaching industry is fundamentally flawed .

However, there's a positive side. It is possible to find the possibility of becoming a genuinely helpful and successful online coach. Just be aware of the risks you're taking making sure that you're doing it for the right reasons. Let me explain...

Do not miss this:

We interviewed coach Sean Smith and he told us about the problems with the business of coaching.

There's a "pyramid scheme" within online coaching

There are ads all the time on places like YouTube and Instagram and Snapchat, but not anymore. When you reach some milestone within your coaching company or get into a challenge, they start to pop up like tiny, nagging insects in the social media pages. "Are you a coach that's really struggling to get clients? The only thing you have to do is adhere to my guarantee system !"

I used to be in the back and be frustrated by these. Now, I'm able to accept these as a cost we must pay for being part of an unregulated industry. Since the business is not regulated There isn't a agreement on how to be successful. It's the reason behind the industry being broken and becoming increasingly challenging for competent, skilled people to succeed.

We don't see this across other sectors. After all, there's nobody out there selling a course for how to become a lawyer within 30 days. or how to go through medical school without taking any pesky tests. Since that's ridiculous isn't it? There's a consensus way to become a lawyer or a doctor or a teach or therapist, or any of a many other licensed professions. There are no shortcuts. And you certainly don't see advertisements that claim to offer: "Seven Easy Steps to Get Your First Patient on the Operating Table to be Brain Surgeons(tm)."

However, the industry of coaching has a lot of promisesand prayers for people's desperation. It's all about the best way to train coaches on thisor teach coaches to do that. Because the coaching industry's most important consumer is... you guessed the answer... coaches. The coaches are the ones buying how to be successful, and likely making up a big amount of revenue for the industry of coaching.

But don't let me get it off-base -- this is okay if you've got enthusiasm for marketing and are adept at teaching the things coaches want. If that's what you're enthusiastic about, it's perfectly fine to be teaching only people your area of experise.

The problem is most individuals aren't particularly skilled or passionate about that. This isn't what they want to teach people -however, they believe that's the only thing that they're able to do.

What happens next? Coaches change who they are in order to achieve their goals. In the absence of the moral argument about whether this is right or wrong, this still creates problems. Since the most important thing to consider if you want to succeed I believe that it is alignment.

Stay clear of giving coaching to coaches who are not yours

If I refer to alignment, it means that it is important to determine what the area of coaching is aligned to the lessons you've learnt in your own life. Every one of us has learned a lot from our childhood. They are lessons we learned and used to conquer the obstacles throughout our lives. They could be financial lessons as well as career or even relationships lessons.

Those life lessons are valuable to somebody out there, meaning they will literally be willing to pay for your insight and the lessons you've learned. And what that means for business purposes is that your life lessons could be an effective product.

So, now the issue is, how can we build a business that incorporates all of your individual skills and weaknesses and strengths, and does not oblige you to perform things that you don't want to undertake? You don't intend to lose your focus on the lessons of life and be caught up in only teaching other coaches how to be a successful coach.

Imagine it this way: When you coach from your life lessons, you are something that people value. However, if you just instruct others on how to succeed as a coach, then it's only what clients consider valuable.

If that's true, then you're "secret ingredient" isn't important. It means your life lessons don't matter. It means your personality doesn't matter as you're interchangeable. It's like you're a commodity. Since the only thing that does matter is people buying the information. The reason it's so critical for us to understand is that, if you are able to achieve a recipe where you don't really matter, you'll never feel fulfilled, happy and feel any joy doing your work because you're not involved in the process.

It is important to begin with the knowledge that you are valuable. Life lessons are worth remembering. You didn't learn this from another program or coach Your own perspective and knowledge of the world.

The reason you should coach from a position of authenticity

Even if it's true that the "guaranteed universally-applied" approach is effective for you, it's still based upon inauthenticity. And that's one of the primary reasons that a large number of people aren't keen selling, or are afraid to make a sale. That's why a lot of those selling techniques feel uncomfortable. (Which is an academic term, by the way.) It's not because of the tactics themselves, it's because you're disconnected from your true self. The belief at the heart of the matter that you've earned your worth.

For example, let's say you buy a sales script to pitch prospective clients. If you do not completely believe in the product it is that you're offering somebody, then it's irrelevant the author of the script or even if they've made millions of dollars from the script. It doesn't matter what comes from your mouth since you're telling a different story. The prospect knows you're trying to sell something that you yourself haven't even had the pleasure of purchasing!

This is why authenticity is so important in advertising the work you are doing. You can get the alignment has been discussed and truly find your voice through the messages. If you're using exactly the same sales strategy, you'll be more successful because you'll be coming from a position of honesty.

The issue is not the words we speak out of our mouths. If I'm certain of the item I'm selling, because I've experienced the life-changing advantages of this product so I can provide you with any sales plan. My certainty is going to sell it as well as my convincing for you is going to overcome your doubts.

The energy is what people typically purchase, not the item. It's your certainty, not the sales techniques and marketing channels.

It's time to become the online coach you'd like to be.

For certain people, this could be a challenge. It's likely that you'll face certain fears, doubts and insecurities along the way. The main issue is: do you possess an ambition to change the world? Are you determined to be successful when it comes to applying your life lessons? Are you looking to assist others with an ideal mental attitude? If you do, then you'll be more likely to succeed.

Whatever you do, please don't disrespect yourself by removing the key ingredient of the process. Don't simply try to make a dollar, commit to make the world a better place.
