Triathlete's knowledge commerce journey goes through coaching and courses, all the way and membership communities
Holding a doctorate in exercise physiology and conducting peer reviewed research, and coaching Olympians and professional Ironman athletes was not enough for the Dr. Dan Plews. Additionally, he is a triathlete himself and is the current Ironman Age Group World Championship Course Winner record holder. He ran a time of 8:24:36.
After his win, and his advanced education in the field He was able to answer a lot of questions - especially surrounding his diet that is low in carbs and how to apply it to long-distance triathlons.
Then the Dr. Plews decided to monetize his expertise with EndureIQ, adding 'knowledge creator as one of his avocations. We'll look into his story.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
Coaching quickly led to courses
Originally, The doctor. Plews started out with the direct method of coaching. Dr. Plews noted that there was so much he could do through one-on one consultations.
In the year 2019, Endure IQ got its beginning. "I got so many [questionswhich I thought I'd simply make this into a course. At first, I thought, 'Oh I'll create a simple white course that can be uploaded to PowerPoint'. But then, I spoke with a friend and he said, "Well If you're planning to do it, you may as well make it a proper job.'"
Today, we have four core courses, as well as mini-courses. Dr. Plews says, "Our primary courses consist of 10 modules in length and take 10 to 15 hours of education. The students have access to the course for a period of ten to 12 weeks as well as access to the instructors." The courses have been accredited by affiliations such as the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association and USA Triathlon.
Courses take off
EndureIQ had a launch event that was a test of their program, LDT One-on-One. "We told them we'd like limit it to the first 50 participants that signed up, and the course was sold out within three minutes," Dr. Plews recalls.
The courses were a hit! The response, however, was massive. Dr. Plews quickly learned his course students were interested in keeping access to the materials and instructor-led webinars after they had completed the course.
This presented him with the dilemma of having to offer ongoing assistance. The following is his thoughts about this dilemma:
"I did not want to keep the course available indefinitely, as it would give people the opportunity to ask questions all the time that you're at the of the whims and calls, and that's not how the system of education operates. When you're an undergraduate student taking a class, you get access to experts, teachers and the instructor throughout the course, but you don't get the right to have them answer your questions for the rest of your life."
Responding to customer demands and creating income
So Dr. Plews discovered a way to meet customer demand in addition to earning recurring revenues from these same course materials. His solution: a $5 per week fee for access to the course materials and webinars once students have completed their course.
"I added this subscription quickly. This is a good choice because we have a lot of customers who have returned," He explains.
The price is $5 per week to have access to every course students have ever taken in order to reward loyalty to those who enroll in multiple courses. Dan said he had 175 students within the education group during our discussion. Therefore, he could bring in a substantial quantity of income every week just by providing access to course material and being willing to respond to questions.
Subscription revenue opens doors
The subscription now brings in revenue, and the revenues in turn creates new potential opportunities for the company.
Dr. Plews says, "The biggest pro to having an online business that is subscription-based is the ability to make better business decisions. If you're assured of a higher revenue stream it is possible becoming a little more savvy with who you're employing as well as where you're investing your money, as you're less at risk. When you're 100 percent dependent on new sales, you don't know the month that is likely to provide."
The author also pointed out that being a member of a community that is active is another advantage - it provides a pool of people with whom he could survey to find out about the creation of new courses, or any other feedback.
However, Dan is realistic about the requirements to sustain a successful membership community. "The cons are that it's never off," he says, "There is a significant amount of customer support that comes with a subscription model because people always have concerns."
