Triathlete's journey to knowledge commerce starts with classes, coaching to a membership-based community

Apr 28, 2022

Holding a doctorate in exercise physiological science, doing peer-reviewed research, as well as training Olympians as well as professional Ironman athletes was not enough to impress The Dr. Dan Plews. Also, he's an avid triathlete and the current Ironman Age Group World Championship Course Record holder for the winner, with the time of 8:24.36. Following his victory, and the extensive education on the topic, he could answer numerous questions - especially surrounding the lower carbohydrates diet, and the most effective way to use it to distance triathlons.

So, it's how Dr. Plews decided to monetize his expertise by launching EndureIQ as well as adding "knowledge creator" as one of his jobs. Let's take a look at his journey.

Interview was lightly edited to ensure clarity.

Training quickly led to courses

In the beginning the beginning, Dr. Plews started out with the method of coaching that is direct. The Dr. Plews noted that there was an amount of work that he could achieve in one-on-one sessions.

In the year 2019, Endure IQ was founded. "I had so many [questionsand I decided to put the course online. Originally I thought, 'Oh you could build an easy white course that could be put up in PowerPoint'. After I'd spoken with a friend who said "Well If you're intending to do this, then you might consider doing it as a proper job.'"

There are now four core courses along with other mini-courses. Dr. Plews declares, "Our classes are 10 modules in length and take about 10-15 hours to teach. Customers get access for a period of ten up to 12 weeks. They also are able to communicate with the instructors." The courses are accredited by associations like those of the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association and USA Triathlon.

Classes begin

EndureIQ announced a preview of their course LDT One-on-One. "We announced that we'd limit it to 50 people at first who registered. It went on sale within thirty minutes." It was sold out in just three minutes.. Plews recalls.

The classes were very popular! However, the response was overwhelming. Professor. Plews quickly learned his students would like to keep access to the material as well as to the webinars led by instructors after completion of the course.

He faced the challenge of needing to continue to support the organization. The following is his thoughts regarding this issue:

"I wanted to avoid having this class on my books for quite a while since students were able to continue asking questions all during the period you're in the middle of a call for, and that's not how education works. When you're an undergraduate student who is enrolled in a course and you're registered, you're entitled to access the expert, your teachers , during this time, however you don't get the right to have them respond to your inquiries throughout your lifetime."

Meeting customer demand and generating revenues

Then that the Dr. Plews discovered a way to meet the needs of customers while generating recurring revenue using the same course materials. His solution: a $5 weekly fee to gain access to the course material as well as webinars after students are done with the class.

"I added this subscription quickly. It's a great choice because there are many clients who are returning," He elaborates.

It costs $5 per week to have the opportunity to access every course that students ever took in order to accumulate loyalty points for students who have attended several classes. Dan stated that there were 175 members who were members of the community as of our interview. Thus, he is capable of earning a substantial amount of cash each week just by providing access to the content of the courseand offering to respond to inquiries.

Subscription revenue opens doors

The subscription now brings an additional revenue. It also opens up additional possibilities for the business.

Dr. Plews says, "The most significant benefit of a subscription-based business is the fact that it allows the business to make more informed choices. If you are assured of a higher revenue stream, you can start becoming more aware of who you're employing and where you're investing your money because there's less risk. However, if you're 100 100% dependent on sales, you never be sure what month it will bring."

The author also pointed out the presence of an active community has another advantage - it provides him with an audience of individuals whom he could survey to learn more what they think about new courses, or other feedback.

But, Dan is realistic about the needs to maintain an active member group. "The disadvantages are that they're always on," he says, "There are a lot of customer support that is part of a subscription plan because members frequently ask questions."
