There's a wealth of member engagement strategies online however, you'll never be able to tell how effective they are until you try them for yourself.

This is why we approached Funk Roberts, a well-known online fitness coach and a frequent member advocate. He was happy to talk about the strategies that have helped him boost retention, engagement, and revenue.

Here are some strategies Funk Robert shared with us.

1. The 'Shared Rituals' Strategy

These shared rituals are constant and repeatable events that your people take part in on a regular basis and create a sense of belonging and community. They act as glue to help keep members returning and help them feel more connected to the group.

One of the main advantages of this strategy include:

  • Develops a solid community culture
  • Encourages regular engagement and participation
  • Improves retention and member loyalty

What is this like in practice?

I am the director of a membership program known as " Over 40 Alpha." It's fitness and health-related membership program for males over the age of 40, 50, 60, and above. I run several shared rituals for this membership program, which ensure that the participants are dedicated to their goals and the community.

  • Sweaty Selfies The members post photos at the end of every workout, expressing their dedication and inspiring others to follow suit.
  • Alpha Meal posts Photos posted by members of their meal, and then break them into macro parts in order to increase accountability and inform people in the community.
  • Birthday Burpees For birthdays, participants film themselves doing burpees in line with their birthday. It's fun, challenging, and brings joy within the local community.

What can you do to implement these routines that are shared by your team family members?

  • Find the key behaviors or activities which align with your tribe's members' objectives.
  • Use easy-to-follow prompts and hashtags to encourage involvement.
  • Include these practices in your onboarding materials to set expectations from the start.

Incorporating these rituals into your shared space and rituals, you'll create an exciting, engaging environment that people don't want to quit.

2. "Identity Crafting" Technique

Understanding your target audience isn't just about understanding their demographics, it's the ability to understand their wants, struggles, and aspirations. People don't just want to buy a item or service, they are looking to join an organization that is bigger than them.

In creating a distinctive and distinctive image for your community, you'll give participants an identity and satisfaction in the person they're becoming through your program.

Many people are looking to become part of a community, they wanna be understood and felt valued. In addition, they want to become part of something larger beyond themselves.

The benefits from this method are:

  • Creates a strong sense belonging
  • Differentiates your membership from competitors
  • Promotes deeper engagement and loyalty

Within the program Over 40 Alpha the participants aren't simply signing up to a fitness club, they are turning into over 40 Alphas. The Over 40 Alpha identity symbolizes determination, strength to change and commitment. Everything, from the rituals to the language, reinforces this identity, making it a badge of honor.

How can you ensure the same feelings among your staff members?

  • Define a unique image that resonates with your audience's aspirations.
  • Integrate this brand's identity in your rituals, content as well as your communication.
  • Continuously reinforce this identity through the sharing of stories, reviews, as well as community interaction.

As members assume a new identity that aligns with their values and values, they are more involved to the group, thus increasing retention.

The  Insider Language Method

Each successful tribe has its own language - an unspoken handshake that distinguishes insiders from the outside world. Developing unique phrases, slogans or hand signals that only your community uses can create a deep sentiment of belonging and exclusiveness. This insider language helps build an exclusive and difficult-to-copy culture.

Some of the key benefits of this method are:

  • It fosters a sense of exclusivity and insider position.
  • Strengthens community bonds.
  • Helps to encourage long-term loyalty by making members feel as if they are part of something unique.

Within Over 40 Alpha, the members have phrases like:

  • GID (Get It Done! ) The rallying cry which reinforces our determination to action and persistence.
  • "Smell The Rose": A reminder to take a slow, deep breath and take in the experience.

They're more than just catchy slogans They are element of the tribe's DNA. They create a culture where people feel they're an integral part of something unique and unique--something they want to remain in.

What can you do to make this happen to your employees:

  • Develop unique phrases or terms which reflect the values of your community and objectives.
  • Make sure to use these terms in all of your website, email messages, and events.
  • Inspire members to take these ideas and apply them on their postings and in their interactions.

The creation of a common language creates the feeling of a community people are proud to be part of. This directly affects retention.

4. The  Transformation Journey Framework

One of the most effective ways to boost retention is to lead your members on a journey of transformation by providing clear goals, rewards and support from the community. The motivation for them is to stay and continue progressing within your membership.

The main benefits of this framework include:

  • Helps keep members engaged and motivated.
  • Provides a clear path that can be followed, which reduces confusion and anxiety.
  • Encourages continuous membership renewal.

How to implement the technology: Craft a path that will lead to transformation with each participant starting with a specific point, and follows a path towards their goals, with your help every step of the way.

This is what I'm doing for my program:

  • Milestones: Set up signs throughout the journey to mark your progress (for instance, the Milestone T-shirts, which participants in the Over 40 Alpha program earn every three phases in the "One Year To Alpha" journey).
  • Rewards Rewards for achievements motivate the next steps.
  • Community support ensure that everyone walks along this road on their own by creating a community of encouragement and support.

How do you put this model for your staff members:

  • Map out a clear, step-by-step path for member transformation.
  • Set up meaningful milestones which are recognized with reward points.
  • Maintain a steady community of support with the group's challenges, checks-ins and encouraging.

The implementation of a transformation path framework creates a compelling reason for members to stay. They are always moving toward the goal they have set that is rewarded with tangible results.

"We've looked at a few other membership tools that came as part of the packages we'd opted to invest in. But there's nothing that can beat Member. I'm sure there's lots of awesome products that folks have created throughout the years. But when it comes to customization, if you make use of WordPress, you can't touch this. Naturally, I'm biased, however we've earned millions through this program."

The new Member packs a punch! and the cost for Member offers a wonderful offer.

It's so easy to work with new products that are being released. It's astounding how they manage this. If I was going to purchase an membership-related plugin this day... I would go with Member. I'd choose to opt for the Member.
