Motion and space in illustration - The CreativeMindClass Blog

Aug 6, 2022

Since as a young child I've always loved drawing, paint, and play with my hands. It has been the easiest way for me to express my feelings. However, growing as a child in Taiwan the pursuit of the art of making was often looked down upon as a way to make money, and I was frequently told by adults to study deeper into practical topics, or else I'll end in the streets starving to death.

Fortunately, my Mom was always encouraging me to pursue anything that I wanted to do and was willing to do everything she could to assist to achieve my objectives. After coming back to the United States and graduating high school, I realized that I would like to go after art as an occupation.

I was accepted into ArtCenter College of design, studying Illustration with the intention of going to the field of feature animation. Along the way, I was introduced to motion graphics, and fell in love with their versatility as well as all the incredible work created by people I greatly admiration.

What would you say about your style?

I am still on the journey to finding a style I am able to confidently identify as my personal. I have the tendency to want to try new things every so often... For instance, one month, I'll be drawn to doing very colorful things, soon I'll want to experiment with the more natural-looking colors. I'll be really into a shape driving style for a time and then, in the next day, I'll become bored and want to try an approach that is built on lines.

Or sometimes I'll try to combine two things I find intriguing as if I'm on a never-ending journey to explore and discover. But after dabbling a little at times I'm beginning to notice that there are certain shapes, colors, compositions I'm drawn to, perhaps it's the beginning of a style?

That's a big reason why I love working for Oddfellows, sometimes I still find myself wondering if I'm lucky enough to be working with an incredible group of individuals. We are required to adjust to various styles depending on the project. nearly every task is completed in different styles, and I'm constantly learning new things from my peers every single day.

What are the most important things to consider when making your illustrations?

I love to draw drawings of subjects interest me or am interested in and then make my own interpretation of the subject.

However, my main goal is having amusement. It is my opinion that having fun is essential to creating something that viewers are able to see whether a person had pleasure doing things... the extra shine.

As I was battling the pandemic, seeing the staff at my studio as well as my friends doing their best to give back to the world In the end, I decided to start a Patreon called Joy&Frens with a 50% of the net revenue goes to charity chosen by my patrons. Here, I provide Tips & Tricks, process videos, ask friends to join me for collaborations and share their wisdom.

I also show my work through Instagram as well as on my website.
