"Let's begin by defining the adjectives which are most appropriate to describe my art: powerful as well as expressive, and rich."

Claudia's background

"My name is Claudia Melchor, I am formalized in architecture, however, I've had a passion for art and 2D mediums since I can recall."

What was the process of transferring the concept of architecture into mixed-media images?

"When the moment came to make a decision about my career, I was told, as numerous others, to not go after a career in art. The advice was well-informed and I followed. Fast forward a Bachelor and Master degree in Architecture, and I was completely bored with the job in front of the computer. Then during my gap year after university, I started making illustrations, drawings and other products that featured my own designs, which made me feel happier!

It all took off right after I secured a position at an office for architecture that I am now working on alongside my illustration career and my recent studies in art and history. I'm hoping that I can quit the position of corporate architect quickly enough to focus completely on the art I love and using mixed media techniques.

I'm hoping that my experience will help individuals who aren't sure what to study to realize that the art degree isn't important. You are an artist regardless of no background. The best part is that this can make your art more unique. Naturally, attending an art college is a wonderful experience as well!"

How would you describe your style of illustration?

"I believe that describing your personal style is a difficult task. I was forced to talk to my friends about this one and what they said about the style couldn't be more precise. My art appears as if everything I paint appears in movement like the wind is blowing across the artwork and dropping colors on everything it touches. It's impossible to find a better description of my work than that.

I like layering textures and playing with lots of shades, and I'm the ultimateist in this regard. The harder I try to limit a palette of colors more, the greater the color range gets.

In a glance at my subjects options, some of my most favorite subjects to paint are landscapes with mountains and oceans because it brings me back to my childhood home in Tenerife is a charming little island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

In addition, I create human-like characters with over-the-top features and vibrant skin. Also, of the course, I include an architectural component - those 6 years of architecture studies must be represented somewhere."

What are the most important factors to making your mixed-media illustrations?

"I consider that the secret in my art is to not plan too much beforehand. To be fair, this technique sometimes works but it can also fail however, not worrying over the end result allows you to be free to play around with your painting.

I like seeing the process of coloring , making decisions and changing my minds in my final pieces. The work reveals my connection to the paper, my context, and to the paint. You can trace my decision-making process to the end piece.

I love being able to work with my hands to mix my own paints. All you require to be able to recreate my artwork is a variety of different substances (doesn't need to be anything expensive, but I like to mix media) and a loose hand, and some courage to mix paints and to start from scratch."
