  • A membership geared towards health that has recently added 100 high-ticket members (and the equivalent of $40,000 to ARR).
  • An author and speaker that brought $30,000 of revenue to their membership community after a 4-week promo.

And while we love to be awed by these achievements There are plenty of wonderful stories about membership and community from communities large and small.

1. Get a razor-sharp niche

It's almost a cliche at this point, but we'll say the same thing repeatedly. The riches are in the areas of.

Communities with too large-scale struggle.

For a first-time host, it's tempting to cast a wide net. Wouldn't you like to have to include as many people as you can to be in your area?

No!

Problem is that when you have a community full of individuals with different interests and interests, it's difficult to connect everyone. And it's unlikely they will interact with one another.

Your community falls on its face.

The uniqueness of the market is what allows it to thrive. The membership communities are built on everything from German dancers to anime. The range of topics includes public speech for finance professionals, to email newsletters for nonprofts.

3. Find the perfect member

This is related to your specialization, but begin with one Ideal Member. It should be a single person you serve, with one narrowly-defined problem or goal.

Are you interested in knowing the most effective exercise you can do to find your Ideal Member? Interview them!

If you've got an idea of the area you're in, make a point to talk with potential members. Although it may be daunting, it will be a great experience you did it.

You can ask them questions such as:

  • What are you struggling with?
  • What kind of support are you looking for?
  • What are you willing to pay for what you want?

Conducting these interviews can bring you one step closer to building a successful membership group. Since it takes the thought from your mind and into the conversation.

However, make sure to be attentive to your Ideal Members.

  • If everyone is interested but no one wants to purchase it, you may need to pivot.
  • If the issue you have identified is not those your preferred members have discussed, it could be necessary to change your focus.

This is market research, and you should adhere to it.

4. Start with the basics

There are membership communities that launch to thousands of members. We hear the stories of the $50,000 per month membership community. We've even shared some at the beginning of this post.

We're not going to get wrong, we hope you'll be able to get there!

Even if you are just starting out, there is beauty in making it small in the beginning.

Communities with smaller populations have a much easier time connecting. It is possible to get acquainted with everyone, something that is nearly impossible in a community of thousands of people.

And once you have gotten really good at meeting the needs of 10 or 20 people in your first community then you are able to scale to thousands.

But remember, it doesn't require hundreds of members to create flourishing community. The average community on Mighty is $48 monthly. It's possible to have the capacity of a community that is six figures with the number of members at 174. And that's not including the aspects that most communities provide as an upsell: events, private coaching, masterminds, and courses. You can make six figures when you have 30 or 40 members If you're doing it correctly.

5. Make money selling something

If it's your first encounter with creating a membership site  or selling some thing.

Just hold your breath and rip off the Band-Aid. Create a landing page and invite your very first participants. It could be a live-course or an opening event. Promoting an offer, even pre-selling it, will help you confirm your idea of a membership-based community.

6. Consider the screening

The health of your membership community is determined by the caliber of people in it. The screening process is a method to ensure you get quality people.

It's a little odd. Will you turn people away? Making it more difficult for them to be a part of your group? Make it more difficult for people to join?

However, in certain instances the "negatives" are offset by the one positive that is very clear: the people who are within your neighborhood actually wish to join in.

Although it's difficult to refuse potential members, screening can increase the worth of your community for those who do come in. It's also worth the weight in gold.

Screening could include:

  • Set up an automated survey for your checkout procedure.
  • A listing of criteria for members who want to join.
  • Live one-on-one or group interviews with potential members.

It might even mean saying no to people who don't fit. However, once you've established a vibrant community you'll thank yourself for joining.

7. Know the numbers

To go full-time into a community membership it is necessary to know some important numbers.

There is no thriving community with 100% engagement all the time.

None. Zilch.

Every community has what we call super members, or "supers". This is the 5 to 10% of members who are highly engaged and bring the fullest effort to all you are involved in.

The majority of members might pop in and out at times. It is possible that there are those who aren't seen at regardless of the cost.

The figures are quite typical. Don't let it deter you. Also, don't let it affect you in any way!

If members have joined your community, they can appreciate the benefits. Particularly if they pay an annual membership fee.

Your community might represent the dream that they've got, even if they can't commit 100% to it right now. Your community might be that push they need to take small steps each month.

Do not sell yourself to anyone. Show up, do your job, but don't stress about it over too much.

Remember that communities with busy members may experience even lower engagement. An executive-focused community could be able to scratch an important itch but that doesn't mean it makes them less active. Be sure that they be there and participate whenever they can.

8. Recognize the importance of the fee for membership

It's easy to think of the cost of membership from your perspective. This is your money flow in the end.

However, you must consider what a membership fee does for your members too. In this case, a member fee can help people be more committed. Paying members are more engaged. Since those who pay are more attentive.

The numbers indicate that a monthly dues to membership does not affect the people's willingness to purchase upsells. 75% of free sites are making upsells to paid products. Yet 95% of paidwalled sites create upsells!

It suggests that not only do members pay for their membership, but they also are willing to be willing to pay more for value. Be aware of this when determining the price of your membership site.

9. Skip the free trial

People who sell stuff online typically offer free trials. But it's not always necessary. We have only 27% of our top 250 income-generating offer a Free Trial.

The free trials are not without merit. However, they can alter the nature of a community. If you've got members who drop into and out of the community, engaging but not staying this can affect the unity of your group.

In a lot of situations, it's more beneficial to do the work ahead of time to ensure the ideal candidate is there; do the screening, and be sure to ensure that the people step in the door willing to commit all of their.

10. Create new deals

In the most profitable community memberships, the best source of new revenue is those who are already paying for membership.

Although it's typical to say, "I'm already charging them, I can't charge for something else," we find that engaged members often want something greater. This might be an engaged mastermind, a 1:1 coach as well as an amazing live or virtual event.

We're not suggesting to increase the price just for the sake of charging more.

But DO look at your existing members and ensure you're providing your members the best value might be able to, even if it requires the introduction of a new offering!

11. Make sure members connect

We research successful communities. They have one thing they have in common.

Communities that are successful have members who have made acquaintances (that's not the host). People come into communities for information, classes, or occasions, but stay with the communities due to the relationships they build.

This means that one of the most important tasks a Host can make is create chances for their members to get together and become friends. This could be done asynchronously, for example: in a discussion prompt or in a blog post. Also, it could be partially synchronous: at office hours, a live event or through structured break-out groups or networking sessions.

Let them out of the way and let them connect.

It will make your community benefit from it.

12. Incorporate your "supers" to aid you.

Your super-members provide a wealth of information. The majority of Hosts aren't using the full power of their members. The most active members of your membership seek ways to connect more. You can also get them to be involved in different ways, other than your normal membership:

  • Request them to facilitate discussion
  • They should be enlisted to moderate the group as well as its content
  • Highlight their story or interview them
  • Ask them to reach out and warmly welcome new members

Not every super will accept our suggestions, but the majority of supers waiting for the opportunity to help more. Don't be afraid to enlist their help.
