Small business owner from Brooklyn Carmen Ladipo, her passion for baking started at the very beginning. "I've been a constant craving for sweets from the moment I remember," Carmen tells . "In the middle of school, I took an course that was very similar to Home Economics, where we were taught how to bake cookies. After I had figured out my ability to sustain my craving for sweets on my own I was finished."
It wasn't until a few years afterwards that Carmen could earn income from her passion by running small-batch cookie ecommerce in addition to her other business. "I'd just moved into New York City, and I tried to think of the best methods of connecting with my acquaintances once I was an adult" Carmen says. "I was able to join the local climbing club , and brought cookies to members of the climbers and the gym that was a great way to make friends." After having been "fervently motivated" numerous times to sell cookie, Carmen took advantage of the time between jobs to register her food-related business Brooklyn.
"It was originally started as a way for me to make a little money to bake cakes and cakes for my clients in my local area," Carmen jokes. "But in the past 5 years Carmen's Cookies has grown to an online business that is now able to offer me shipping cookies across America." United States to strangers and acquaintances alike."
We spoke with Carmen about the way she manages the social and environmental impacts of her enterprise, about how she manages her sole-woman business in addition to her other obligations, and about the equipment to help Carmen's Cookies operate smoothly.
Local community development and social influence
Visitors to the Carmen's Cookie website and social media are immediately welcomed by the friendly and warm character of the brand. The slogan is "Providing happiness for your closeness." Carmen's Cookies includes experimental seasonal flavor like the ras el hanout and matcha lemon. There are also classics like the brown butter chocolate chip and orange clove. A quick glance at the reviews of the cookies to see the joy her treats bring to clients all over the world.
However, from the very beginning it was clear that Carmen's Cookies was much beyond selling cookies. "I believe that food-related business owners have a responsibility to their environment as well as their communities in general to be aware about their impact," Carmen says.
"There are a variety of sources that go into creating and selling food items that need attention and consideration in order to do minimal harm unto the planet. This is why I pay attention to what my ingredients come from and how their manufacturers have a view of their environmental and social impact." Carmen is open on her website about where she responsibly sources her ingredients. It even has an interactive tool to find out where her baking chocolate originates from.
However, her commitment doesn't end there. "It's essential for me to find ways to help support the ongoing efforts to ensure food justice in the Brooklyn neighborhood," Carmen says.
"Every each year, I select an organization that works directly with its community members for the purpose of promoting economic growth and sustainable food production. I give a small percentage of my year's sales to these charities as I am convinced that Carmen's Cookies to create an impact on the community it is based in." The process of facilitating donations of hundreds of dollars to different local and national charities to support people who are in need of food justice or marginalized communities with the help of cookies is an important high point."
