Ever since her early days as a young child, New Zealand-based maximalist designer and artist Evie Kemp was a lover of art and design. "I used to draw all the time or redesigning my dollhouse or watching makeovers of rooms on the television." Then, during her teenage years, Evie says, "I began to feel very anxious about being  different and I did everything to avoid standing out."

That urge to fit in was what led her to law school. But when she was studying law, "my mental health became worse," Evie says, "and I had to take 6 months off. As I recovered I refocused my efforts on finding out what I actually enjoy, and chose to pursue a degree in graphic design instead." Reconnecting with her early passion for art has had a profound impact on her. "It was through that degree when I began to discover my own voice--and embrace my quirks that I'd put aside for so long."

Within the fifteen years that have passed since taking that step to concentrate on enhancing her abilities in the field she's passionate about. Evie's determination and expressive voice has helped her build her own business. "I find increasing evidence that I'm more bold and artistic and colorful than ever," she says. "It's a bit like the old "Which was first: the egg or the chicken?' thing It's hard to tell how much I'm more comfortable and confident with myself the more my work becomes more exuberant or opposite. I'd never say my style is "developed," but I'm sure it's in the process of developing."
