Filmmaker Mayumi Yoshida is forging her individual style with her own personal story
Mayumi Yoshida has received notice for her participation in the field of filmmaking. But, according to her own experiences, beginning her filmmaking career almost completely by accident. "I began my career with the position of an actor" states Mayumi. "There was a shortage of parts that were available, and I didn't have enough parts to fill one which I believed was the most important part of my soul and made me feel"Oh I'm living my dreams.'" The opportunity came to raise funds for a short film, Mayumi decided to take the lead and decided not to just assume the role of a major player, but to become the director of the film, which is a narrative of personal experience.
"That led to a variety of film festivals."" says Mayumi. "It inspired me to consider"I could do a lot to be a better filmmakers, storytellers, and in the same manner as an actor." In the time since, Mayumi has continued to develop her film skills and has worked with artist Amanda Sum on artful music videos that are challenging expectations and challenge the conventional structure of the film genre.
"The most beneficial guidance I've received from a acquaintance who wasn't my own was the fact that they advised me that I was accountable to my actions," says Mayumi. That means accepting her work regardless of self-doubt. "Don't ever allow yourself to be an ego-centric victim for the sake of others," she adds. "You feel like"Oh it's way too much for me to even think to address the problem. Oh, but I won't get in. It's not going to occur.' The topic has not been discussed yet. The truth is that you've told me this. Take it easy. You can make the shot but you'll not ever. In most cases, you will find you will succeed. out."
I had the pleasure of having an intimate conversation with Mayumi prior to her Staff Picked film "Different Than before" that was awarded the Jury Award for Best Music Video during the 2023 SXSW festival. Have a look at some highlights from our conversation below as well as read the complete interview here.
HTML0 What themes do you find yourself returning to time and time during the course of your career?
Mayumi Mayumi: The most popular subjects I incorporate into my films are those that explore identity, oftentimes family drama. It is my belief that a substantial portion of my work stems from my personal. It means that I am interested in relations between families and between different cultural backgrounds. The cross-cultural or intergenerational are my main interests.
What are the reasons behind this?
Mayumi The greatest thing I love about film is the fact that it's an living thing and cannot cease to exist. Film tells stories and now it's like this container but it'll remain in existence all the time. That's exactly what people in the film encounter, even though they've passed away. It's true that I've seen several films created before I was born and have influenced my everyday life. If I was the one responsible for creating stories that would endure through the years, it became sort of my purpose following the creation of films that I enjoyed immensely. I was thinking "Ooh I'm sure there's something that's more. The goal is not simply to share what I'm passionate about."
We'd like to hear what you think of the staff Pick experience.
Mayumi HTML0 - Mayumi experience was, in actual fact, incredibly exhilarating. The film really touched everybody, considering that it was a crucial public service announcement and we'd like to see it be successful, but not because we put in a lot of effort to make it happen however it was imperative that the message be conveyed at the moment and is still being. We launched the film during Asian Heritage Month, so it's essential to ensure that the majority of viewers watched it and felt the impact. The staff at our office was in support of the project, and I was incredibly impressed with this.
I became familiar with Staff Picks. I thought "Oh it's the cool crowd of people." I felt like "Oh, am I worthy?" It dawns on me that I'm just a cool and fun group of people who get together and I'm honored to be part of the group.
What's next in your daily life?
Mayumi Mayumi: My next project to complete is making my first movie, which is based on my first short film AKASHI. It's been a long journey and I'm thrilled that we're finally able to make this. I'm extremely excited to present this work at these incredible gatherings - as well as for the public to be able to enjoy it, and hopefully in the near future.
