When I'm free I love to complete 30-minute-hour research or other explorations in which I can do whatever think I'm feeling the day. It was a huge help in my development, however it also helped find what sort of things I was interested in.
These days I really like to concentrate on the color of light and also how to describe things in a way that is simple so I don't have to go overboard in everything. My preference is to draw my forms pretty close to real life However, as time goes on, I'm hoping to make shapes move further and also be more stylized in my work.
If I begin a painting, typically, I like laying out my main shapes first either in BW or straight in colors. When I believe it's important first, I begin with linework initially. When I've got a solid base I like to map into the light shapes as well as shadow shapes onto separate layers. Not until then do I start to create or render the image generally moving from large to small particulars.
In the Streets of London painting I employed a similar method. In order to have neat edges and keep everything well-organized, I employed a large number of layers. I also put the primary light in a separate layer.
The layers make me feel less anxious about making mistakes. But when I'm comfortable with the stage I'm in with the painting I start merging a few aspects, while keeping only what I feel is necessary.
For me, colours are much a "feel" thing, I go with those that feel right. Also, I have a number of reference sources I consult to assist me in choosing the right colours, sometimes I blend references but others I use only just one.
It's certainly a smart idea to study colour and light theory, so you know what you could do to help make the overall colour palette and values better.
It's a bit difficult for me to define what the secret to creating my art... I just like to explore diverse styles, techniques, and subject matters and get inspiration from others artists.
I'm only a few months into my artistic journey that I is still trying to determine what I'm like as an artist, and what my style is. The main difference nowadays is that I don't think about it as much as I did in the past and I believe that's made a lot of difference.
