about pursuing new challenges and a change in the direction of your career

Prior to moving to London in the year 2017 I was in a tiny town in Germany and worked as an After Effects animator. While there weren't many challenges to my creativity My skills slowed rapidly and I was really unhappy.

Moving from London and getting to know everyone who is a wonderful animator here gave me a huge motivational boost. It was like "Damn it, I'm among the cool kids . I've better get my gear going."

After visiting this year's Pictoplasma Conference, I decided to join the world of quirky character designers. The realization came quickly that my characters work most effectively in 3D and I'm still learning that is challenging, but also very enjoyable!

My work was noticed by the folks of Greenhouse Animation, and I'm now represented as a director with them.

The X-Files project and the secret of disappearing socks

One of the first clients I worked on using my new style is that of the Covered by Lemonade clip.

Lemonade Insurance approached me to design a piece for its ongoing Instagram collaborative with artists. Since the company is a content insurance company and the concept of adorable household items in trouble immediately came to mind. This is how the X-Files project came to life.

The last winter, I was on lockdown watching all the x-files, so involving a classic alien abduction seemed to be logical. But all the characters had to be in the same spot at the time of finalization to close the animation loop in order for them to be actually abducted. This was when I came up with the idea to have the washing machine explode and the one pink sock move towards the UFO.

While modeling my UFO while giving the UFO little legs, I was able to see the way everything can get sucked into. The UFO is missing its sock and is working to retrieve it!

To me, creating a memorable story is best done by mixing diverse things that may seem incompatible initially. To make something unexpected occur and give unanimate objects an identity by putting funny faces onto them , is the best way to have fun for me!

 About the animation workflow

My process always begins by drawing sketches of my characters and an outline of the story. I turned the animation for Lemonade to help communicate the concept and timing. Then, I get to Cinema 4D and model all my characters. It is also the time I try out different techniques and design frames.

When the animation created within Cinema 4D is done, I then switch to After effects for compositing and finishing touches. For the pink light beam for example, is done using After Effects.

About the sound effects and working in conjunction with Phill Brookes

This was the first time I did with a sound designernamed Philip Brookes who really did a great job! His work lifts the whole footage to the next level and connects everything perfectly! This was a fantastic undertaking to create I'm looking forward to make many more like it!

We've spoken to Phil about the process of making sound effects to be used in The X-Files project. Read the interview by Phil Brookes.

Right now, I'm learning more ways to rig characters and creating gorgeous textures using Cinema 4D and Redshift. I'm experimenting with the combination of 2D and 3D animation, and I'm excited to see what direction my journey into character design will take me in the future!

Artists can get tips about how to alter a career direction

I have some suggestions to anyone wanting to change directions:

  1. Discover which method suits your thoughts best, and then take the time to learn it! Moving design is a process that feels like you're required to learn all there is. However, that's not the case.
  2. Take your weirdness seriously and don't minimize it. Your weirdness is unique. Your unique voice and style is distinctive.
  3. Take your time and embrace your ideas. Whatever it is that's taking place in your head take it on and create it!
