Cutaways and coverage
A good editor can be an ideal companion to filmmakers. Simply put, an editor's task is to gather all the information that was recorded by camera during a certain task and put it into a coherent story. However, don't fall for the flimsy idea! There's a lot more to editing than splicing 'err' clicking-and-dragging clips into a timeline! An experienced editor is aware of the essence of the narrative's drama and selects which parts are needed to create the whole.
Tutorial for Video Coverage and Cutaways
Pro-tip: Keep your resources (cast crew, crew, gear and time at the restaurant of your cousin's father-inlaw's friend's uncle's) in your mind while deciding whether or not to do "just one additional" shot of a particular scene. If you're not offering very high-end prices, you don't need to be the full David Fincher on people.

When you're done with the (shoot) day, coverage provides you options for putting together the finest film you can, and cutaways can be quick and powerful ways that will help tell your story visually. Planning for both will ultimately enhance your film's quality and enjoyable for the viewers.
Until next time, friends!
