Celebrate History and Embrace the Future: International Women's Day 2024

Mar 14, 2024

Each year, on the 8th of March all of humanity comes together for the celebration of International Women's Day (IWD). It's a time when we celebrate the amazing achievements of women, consider the obstacles they face and commit ourselves to ensuring that equality truly reigns. As we look back, the day wasn't born overnight. It's a culmination of decades of struggle, determination, and unwavering determination. Today, we honor this day and encourage you to as well when we embark on short journey through the long and rich history of IWD as a testimony to the force of action by the entire community.

Starting with Seeds of Change to a Global Movement

The seeds for IWD began to germinate during the first half of 20th century, a time where the struggle for women's rights gained momentum. On March 8 in 1857, female workers were on strike to protest the poor working conditions and subpar protections for women within their industries of textile. The strike demanded a shorter work day and fair wages for living. A few years later, on March 8th an organized march by female who worked in the trade of needles was held to oppose child labor and conditions in sweatshops, and to demand that women be able to vote. In 1910, two years after the march, March 8th became annually celebrated to be International Women's Day.

The Catalyst to Change

Through the 20th century IWD was a powerful force for positive changes. It became a platform for women to raise their voice on topics such as the right to vote, fair work conditions, pay and access to education. In 1975 IWD was recognized by IWD was recognized by the United Nations officially recognized IWD which affirmed the global importance of IWD.

A Day of Celebration and Action

Today, IWD is celebrated in countless ways, from awe-inspiring parades to intimate gatherings. It's an opportunity to honor trailblazing women in every field, from scientists and artists to entrepreneurs and activists. However, IWD is not just about celebration; it's an opportunity to take action. It is a reminder that the battle to achieve gender equality is far from over. It is imperative to continue to fight for equal opportunities, challenge damaging stereotypes, and support girls and women everywhere. The focus for International Women's Day 2024 is " Invest in Women: Accelerating Progress" with the globally promoted hashtag, #InvestInWomen.

According to the UN, these five aspects are essential to push ahead this hashtag until it becomes outdated:

  • investing in women an issue of human rights:Time is running out. Gender equality is the greatest human rights issue, affecting everyone.
  • Eliminating poverty Because of the COVID outbreak and the conflict in the region over the last 75 million people are living in extreme in poverty as of in the year 2000. Immediate action is crucial to prevent over 342 million women and girls who are living in poverty by 2030.
  • Financial management that is gender responsive: Conflicts and rising costs could cause 75% of nations to reduce public expenditure in 2025. This could negatively affect women and the services they require.
  • Moving to a more eco-friendly and caring society:The present economic system significantly impacts women. The advocates advocate for a shift towards a green economy and care society to amplify women's voices.
  • Helping women to be change makers: Despite leading efforts women's organizations only receive 0.13 percent of the official support for development.
