Riso Chan on embracing her true self through art:

My work is extremely emotional. My work is inspired by photographs that depict emotions I am feeling. I've always been a sensitive individual. From the time I was a young child, there was something that always was a little uncomfortable and I attempted to get the feeling out of my body. (...) When you get old enough You find that everything is okay and everyone is feeling different. I chose to channel every ounce of emotional energy I have to my daily life and start creating art. I use it to increase my creativity and spark new thoughts. This is amazing due to what I've been struggling to put down throughout my entire life. Then, suddenly I sat down on the paper, and it was able to feel a huge sense of relief. Finally, there is the chance to make use of this sensation, and I have the ability to utilize my emotions, pains, and joys to put them down on the paper. The experience was truly wonderful and took me to an emotional state of being filled with gratitude. The experience started to resonate with a number of other people too. I began to open to putting ideas on paper I'd never thought of before. As opposed to striving to emulate the other artists that had previously "made it" I was really listening to what I want to convey and who I am as a person. I accepted something I didn't like about me and saw this as my greatest strength. I'm extremely happy that I am the most sensitive person I am.
