Are there ways to let AI let creativity flourish? The perspectives of filmmakers and VP of Creative

Sep 13, 2023

There's no debating it, AI isn't going anywhere.

While there is a legitimate discussion about whether AI could replace writers, editors, as well as concept creators, a lot of people are accepting AI's inevitable nature and are now considering its potential to revolutionize the way work is done.
At Cannes I heard different perspectives from creatives like will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas fame discuss the way in which AI will change our world over the coming 10 years. Much of the conversation was focused on how AI quickly unlocks people's dormant abilities and its effects on creative processes.

I've been a creative director for 20or more years, I decided to express my thoughts and take this as an opportunity begin a dialogue with my community.

What's the state of affairs, and how do we move forward in the future?

Here's the way AI is able to accomplish now

"I was a magician before I was a filmmaker. Very quickly, once you're a magician you learn that any sufficiently sophisticated technology can't be distinguished from the art of. It can even be terrifying if you don't know how it's working or the process. The same way that I'm feeling about AI for artists or a individual who earns money by the thoughts that are on your mind, onto a paper or display, AI is a scary thing because it could take over your work."   Ben Proudfoot, Oscar-winning short directories, found as CEO of Breakwater Studios

Creativity is a fundamental human trait that an AI can't easily replicate.

Midjourney went live in July 2022. ChatGPT was launched in November of the same year. In the past, we've observed self-described "non-creatives" unlock creativity that has gone under-utilized due to the lack of skills.

The results of some of these projects are quite impressive, and the technology has evolved at such a rapid pace, that you'll have a hard time believing that these tools are only 1 year old.

AI will help you to communicate concepts

The concepts of nuanced films, stories, images, or music have been restricted by the techniques and the skills required to put these ideas to fruition.

In the recent year, pictures like this can be made with the use of a couple of simple keys:

Midjourney 5.2 is a new era for AI images.

48 hours in, and people are already pushing boundaries.

For experienced creators like the award-winning filmmaker Hashem Al-Ghaili the opportunity is greater.

Take a look at his AI-generated short film " Last Stand," which depicts how humankind would react in the event that extraterrestrials came into contact.

"AI is going to have us look at things in a way that you've never even thought of," says Crystal Edmonds the Head of Accounts as well as event Activation for Magnet Media Films. "I believe that it's going to make us think. It will teach us things that we never even knew we really wanted to learn about. You're likely to see people just unlock another degree of creativeness through AI."

Consider, for example, Staff Pick winner Paul Trillo's short film "Thank You for Not Answering."

Instead of trying to achieve realism, he intentionally leans into the dream-like aesthetic inherent to Runway's Gen-2. "As the man who sends a message to a person who is from the history, he's overwhelmed with fragments from his faded memories and imagining a future that might be."

As a true artist He's adjusted to the weaknesses and strengths of the medium to create something unique.

AI can help you validate your concepts

While these are stunning examples of how AI is utilized to communicate the artistic perspective, AI for commercial use is, at this stage, a gimmick.

Have a look at the AI-generated beer commercial. This is a product from the time, and it could not be considered to be a legitimate advertisement even if it were a legitimate advertisement.

It does, however, offer more than sufficient information to communicate an idea to executive more effectively than a moodboard, sketch, or elevator pitch ever could.

Through generative AI, you don't have to count on words alone to paint a visual for 10+ individuals: instead, you can make use of a descriptive prompt in order for the creation of the perfect sizzle movie, animatics or pre-visualizations, to convince viewers to accept a certain vision.

What is that a signification to creatives of today?

Begin to learn how to create an effective AI-related prompt. AI.

"I think that this generation will become more proficient with the tools that we have in our arsenal and will begin using generative AI for both written and visual mediums," says Orlando Baeza, Chief Marketing Officer as well as Chief Revenue Officer of Flock Freight. "I am actually convinced that there is a lot of job growth here, but it will require upskilling our current force, and then this next generation coming in and evolving it."

AI is a great way to save production time

Nowadays, videos take an average of between two and three weeks to produce from beginning to end However, AI is speeding the procedure, which allows creators to be more creative and giving producers an extra time for tasks which requires a focused effort.

"I think one of the greatest crises in the film industry is the cost making a film. The barriers to entry are high. the entry required to create a film -- one important aspect about is that it democratizes filmmaking," continues Baeza. "So If AI as well as machine-learning are tools that could help a person with limited resources, to achieve large audience, then that's an excellent thing, isn't it?"

AI is already making videos easier to produce by automating processes like editing transcription, personalization and planning. Like, for instance, adding or removing elements from background videos was laborious and time-consuming and now just requires using the Generative Fill tool.

"I believe that organizations will view AI as efficiency and productivity improvements," says Baeza. "I believe AI will become a powerful partner and will likely be a part of organizations that are creative."

This is what AI won't aid you in.

AI can't make when you become viral.

Machine learning operates by analyzing pre-existing data and following the patterns it previously consumed. For example, a generative AI tool can come up with a beautiful picture of a blue-colored cup from the thousands of images it has taken of blue cup.

It's not about copying what's worked before but rather, it's about framing things with a fresh perspective, putting a new spin on old ideas and making connections that no one else has done. The way Steve Jobs famously said:

"Some individuals say to give customers what they want but that's not my approach. The job of us is to know what they're likely to need prior to giving them what they want. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked my the customers what they were looking for, they would've told me a faster horse.' People don't know the things they'd like until you present it to them. Our task is to read the things that aren't yet on the page."   Steve Jobs, Co-founder of Apple

Creativity is a mix of art and science and AI is really good at the science portion of this equation.

Certain standard, reproducible best practices that we use in the area and that AI is able to reproduce, for instance the rule of thirds or making use of large fonts in order to advertise a sale. But so far, AI isn't able to remain forward-looking. It can't account for virality or identify an innovative, new perspective that consumers will appreciate.

If you're a creative person, this is great news. Differentiate yourself with creative ideas and use AI to help bring your ideas to life.

AI can't replicate the creative process.

One of the best aspects of the process of creating is that -no regardless of how precise your idea is, the idea develops a personality that is its own when it's developed. Every person that touches the concept brings their personal ideas and perspectives to it, which means the final product has an appeal that you could not have imagined.

A film editor I worked with once told me, "You might have shot your storyboard, but your storyboard doesn't mean anything now and I'm just going to utilize the footage I've got." Even if everything was shot as planned within the storyboard, a film editor may highlight specifics or alter the footage in a way that was not in line with your initial plan.

Currently, I don't see an avenue for AI to replicate the process of creativity in this method.

There isn't a distinctive creative outlook that it can add to the process in the same way that an individual filmmaker or editor might. Therefore, even when AI can be used throughout the process of creation -for example, to help speed ideation or editing -- humans still play a role in the creative process.

Be curious and keep your mind open

The bottom line is that AI will accelerate our ability to communicate our vision which is a catalyst for the next generation of creatives to come out and do feats we would've never dreamt of. If I could capture this moment in words I'd say it's excited and nervous since unlike any other time for a long time, we're looking towards the future.

Actually, I'm one man, with one set of thoughts and opinions. I think we should keep looking at possibilities using a playful interest, keep an open-minded mind, and keep the conversation going.

And, if you're curious- where do you stand? How are you using AI now, and where do you think it's taking us?
