A film maker Mayumi Yoshida is forging her own path through the use of personal stories in order to tell her story.
Mayumi Yoshida could be in the present getting recognition for her contribution to the field of filmmaking. However, when she relates her journey, she found herself in the direction field at the whim of. "I began my career acting as an actor" Says Mayumi. "There was a lack of opportunities to play roles that I was able to play, but it was not enough of a character I cherished deeply in my heart and encouraged me to feel"Oh it's my life.'" So, when an opportunity was presented to raise money for the production of a short film, Mayumi was the first to take on the challenge to take on the character of an individual, but create the movie, which she tells her personal tale.
"That has led to an array of film festivals"" Mayumi says. Mayumi. "It caused me to think"There's many things I could do as a filmmaker or a storyteller instead of just performing." Since the time, Mayumi has continued to grow her filmography and has recently added working with artist Amanda Sum on artful music videos that test viewers' expectations and test the limits of genre structures.
"The most valuable information I've received from anyone apart from myself was by someone who advised me to believe in my talents," says Mayumi. The key is to embrace the confidence to stand in her cause regardless of doubt about yourself. "Don't be afraid to refuse to do something for others," she adds. "You consider, 'Oh I'm too old to take action about it. Oh, but I won't get in. The chances are not that good. No one has ever told you this to date. You've probably already informed them. Don't let it go, take them out and never will. In most cases the result is positive."
We talked to Mayumi prior to the launch of her Staff Picked film "Different Than Before" won the Jury Award for Best Music Video at the 2023 SXSW festival. Check out the highlights of our discussion in the video above and also read the entire interview here in the next article.
What are the themes that you will likely return to over and over in your job?
Mayumi Mayumi: One of the main themes I explore in my films is the quest of identity. Often, it is family drama. My films tend to have their roots in intimate spaces. So, the relationships among families or among different generations, between generations, and intercultural and intercultural, are common things.
What are your motives?
Mayumi Mayumi The most important features of film is that they last in perpetuity. The film is a story, and is actually a time capsule. Then it'll continue to live in perpetuity, which is what these individuals will experience when you're away from the moment. Based on my own experience watching a variety of films that were made before of my time, and that have an impact on the way I live my life. If I were a conduit for stories that would live forever I decided that was my objective after I made films of my own which I enjoyed. I thought to myself, "Ooh, there's more to this. There's more to it than simply expressing my passions."
Tell us your thoughts about your Staff Pick experiences.
Mayumi The event was truly exhilarating. I believe it made an enormous impression on us all, as it had an important message to the world and everyone want to hear it heard by the masses, it wasn't just due to everyone putting into it. If we put a lot of effort in it. It is because the message was something we had to convey when we did and is still being delivered. The release was during Asian Heritage Month, so it was crucial that a lot of viewers could see and feel it. Staff, on the other hand helped to increase that. I was extremely pleased with this.
I was extremely familiar in Staff Picks, and I was thinking "Oh it's the cool group of individuals." I was thinking "Oh did I really deserve to be there?" Now I feel as if it's a bunch of really cool friends hanging out which is why I'm so grateful to be a part of this community.
What's next?
Mayumi What I'm currently preparing make is my debut film, which is inspired by my first short film called AKASHI. It's been a long journey and I'm thrilled that we're finally able to film this. I'm thrilled to show the film at these amazing festivals - and also be able to show it off to the world for one day.
