8 Metrics Every Course Creator Needs to be tracking Eight Metrics Every Course Creator Needs to Track

Sep 1, 2022

Course designers are always searching for methods to enhance their course. One way for this is to listen to your learners.

However, the issue is that many of your students won't let you know what's happening in your course. Some will leave the course, cancel their account, or even complete the class and then disappear and you won't ever know the whole story.

Tracking online course metrics helps you understand what your students have to say about your class and how you can improve it.

There's more to metrics than counting the number of students who complete a course. No course will have the perfect finish in the event of a life-changing incident or when a student's motivations or circumstances change.

We'll look at eight online course metrics that you ought to be keeping track of and the best way to make use of that information to boost your performance.

Learning Performance and Progress

      Metric 1 the Course Progression

In a nutshell those who are able to complete your course at a good pace are most likely engaged and invested. It could signal a strong course design that you can duplicate or show to other students.

When monitoring course progression, consider asking these the following questions:

  • How long will it take an individual to finish an entire course?
  • What speed do they move through each topic and lesson?
  • What concepts seem easy, and which seem too complicated?
  • If students consistently struggle the course, what can I do to help them understand?

Student Satisfaction and Approval

      Metric 2. Exit surveys

If a person has finished a course doesn't mean they loved the experience. It is advisable to conduct surveys after the course is completed (and once learners know their feedback won't affect the final grade.) A quick exit survey can capture initial impressions.

      Metric3: course reviews

      Metric 4: Instructor efficacy

Even the best instructors might be hesitant when teaching online courses. Be sure to observe the way instructors respond to learner requests and how they're communicating with your learners. It is particularly important to track if instructors change but not the material for the class. Is there a difference in student engagement?

      Metric 5: Discussions and Comments

Online discussion threads provide a wonderful opportunity for students to study the material with others and experience a sense of community. Check group discussions for how learners are talking about and interacting with the material. Certain levels of involvement in the discussion board can be a sign of validity!

Professional Competency of Learners and Skills

      Metric 6: Quiz Scores

Metric 7 Quality of Assignment Submissions

The quality and depth of assignments helps you get an idea of how students are engaging with your course. If you can, provide learners personal feedback on each assignment (or review the feedback that an instructor leaves). This will help you determine what students have to overcome. It can also lead to better achievement rates (and reviews!) for individuals who are learners.

      Metric 8. Certifications vs Retakes

How long do learners stay engaged in the course and do they come back to take another course? How many finish the course with a certification, or how many need to go back to the exam? An impressive completion rate is a simple statistic that you can track without needing students to provide you with an exact review.

Does your LMS Feature Customizable Metrics?

  • Take a look at a picture of assignment and enrollment status at the time you sign in
  • Keep track of student progress live and observe how students move between classes and keep an eye on scores from tests.
  • You can manage assignments by approving or deleting assignments
  • Run advanced reports and export course data to an Excel file or CSV. CSV or Excel spreadsheet
